About Me
My name is Akeryah StSurin. I am currently a senior at Skidmore College pursing a degree in Human Physiological Sciences with a minor in Business Management. I am driven by wellness, creativity, and community as I explore the intersection of women’s health, research, and storytelling to make a meaningful impact.
My Story
My story begins in the 7th grade, when I read I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou. I didn’t know it then, but that book would change the direction of my life. Through Maya’s story, I saw the reality of what happens when girls especially young Black girls grow up without guidance, protection, or honest conversations about their bodies and their worth. It opened my eyes to how deeply sexual health, safety, and empowerment shape the lives we lead as women.
At the same time, I was witnessing similar patterns in real life. Black mothers were often left unsupported during pregnancy and birth, and young girls around me were navigating womanhood without mentorship or reliable information. What began as a moment of understanding quickly became a calling. I realized I wanted to dedicate my life to creating the kind of support, knowledge, and care that so many girls and women never receive.
That early spark guided the rest of my path. It shaped the way I approached my education, pushed me toward learning more about women’s health, and strengthened my passion for advocacy and community-centered wellness. Over time, I discovered how essential representation, compassion, and culturally-aware healthcare are especially for Black women. I knew I didn’t just want to observe the problem. I wanted to be part of the solution.
Today, that calling has evolved into a clear purpose: becoming a nurse and, eventually, a women’s-health nurse practitioner who centers care, dignity, and empowerment. My journey is grounded in creating the support system I once wished existed for so many young Black girls. Every step I take brings me closer to the communities I am meant to serve.
And this is still just the beginning.
Mission & Direction
My Misson
My mission is to empower young Black girls and women by expanding access to education, support, and compassionate healthcare. I am committed to breaking cycles of silence around sexual and reproductive health and replacing them with knowledge, confidence, and cultural understanding. My goal is to show up as the guidance, advocate, and safe space that so many girls deserve but often go without. Through clinical care, community work, and storytelling, I aim to create a world where women especially Black women feel seen, supported, and informed at every stage of their lives.

What I’m Working Towards
I am currently completing my path toward becoming a women’s-health nurse practitioner, with plans to integrate doula and birthwork into my practice. I hope to create community-centered programs that give girls and young women the health education, confidence, and support systems they often lack. My long-term goal is to build a space—whether a practice, platform, or initiative—where women can learn, heal, and thrive with dignity and representation at the center.
